Cuttack: Yuvraj Singh blasted a chanceless century in the second one day international after making his comeback following a three-year absence from the 50-overs format.
Playing his 295th ODI, Yuvraj reached his 14th hundred off 98 balls after the hosts were put into bat by England in the second match of the ongoing series, which India already lead 1-0.
Yuvraj came to the crease after India were reduced to 22/2 in the third over following a rare Virat Kohli (8) failure.
However, the 2011 World Cup Player of the Tournament overcame the testing phase and took the attack back to the opposition as he hit 15 fours and a six in his first century since March 2011. Yuvraj was also involved in a century partnership for the fourth wicket with Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who himself registered his 62nd half-century. It was also the duo’s 10th century-plus stand in the 50-overs cricket.
Yuvraj had last played ODIs for India in 2013 during the tour of South Africa. With new, younger batsmen coming in from the assembly line, it looked like Yuvraj would only feature in the T20 format before earning a comeback after Virat Kohli took over as limited-overs captain from Dhoni. Yuvraj, who made his debut in 2000, continues to be a major crowd-puller. He was key to India’s triumph in the 2007 World T20 and starred with both bat and ball as Dhoni’s team lifted the World Cup in 2011.
It was later learnt that Yuvraj had battled a rare form of cancer throughout the tournament. Though he came out of a turbulent period, thanks to treatment in the United States of America, he struggled to be the same fluent run-maker.
Returning to the T20 side in 2013, Yuvraj cemented his place for the 2014 World T20 but his sluggish knock in the final against Sri Lanka put him out of favour with the selectors again. He returned for the 2016 edition at home and after some gutsy performances, pulled a hamstring in the final league game against Australia.
Yuvraj did not play any more cricket in 2016 but it was a special year for him nevertheless. First, he scored loads of runs in the Ranji Trophy and then married Hazel Keech in a glittering ceremony.
