Won’t Tolerate Attempts To Displace Bengalis In Assam: CM Mamata

Kolkata: Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday heavily criticised the National Register of Citizens in Assam. She alleged that a conspiracy is afoot to target Bengali people and send them away from the State.

“People from Bengal work in other States and become citizens there. Similarly, people of other States also work in Bengal. This is a free country. But in the name of citizenship register, the BJP is trying to victimise over 1 crore people,” she said.

The CM added that one person has already committed suicide after his name did not appear in the register. “They are threatening to send away Bengalis working in Assam. I want to warn the BJP, do not play with fire. We do not support this divisive politics. Just like people of Assam are welcome in Bengal, they must accept Bengalis as their own.” We oppose any attempts to create divisions between people, the CM said.
