Jalpaiguri: In a shocking incident, four women were allegedly assaulted while two
of them disrobed on suspicion of being child-lifters. The incident took place at
Dawkimari village in Dhupguri block in Jalpaiguri.
Amitabha Maity, superintendent of police (Jalpaiguri) said that the four women were
not from that area and they were between 20 to 50 years of age.
One woman said that she was looking for a relative. Another woman said that she was
visiting a relative while the third woman told that she was a seller selling
clothes door-to-door. The fourth woman said that she came to a neighbourhood bank.
The police rescued them and took to a nearby primary health centre. Their condition
is stated to be stable.
No arrests have been made so far. The SP said that the rumour was spread by those
who wanted to disrupt the law and order of the district.
While talking to news agency PTI, he said, “We are creating awareness on this
through the social media and public media like announcements over mikes. People
should contact the police on the helpline if they find someone suspicious, but not
take law into their own hands.”
The police has started an investigation.
