Kolkata: In yet another instance of how the women of this city are increasingly becoming unsafe in the city, a 21-year-old young woman returning home in a radio taxi was stopped by some local youths, beaten up and “warned of even more dire consequences.” But then, there are always silver linings. It was the Ola cab driver who stood up and tried to defend the woman. In the process, he too was beaten up and his car badly damaged.
The incident was reported on Sunday night from the Patuli area. According to police, a case has been registered but no arrests have been made so far. According to police, Priyanka Das of Deshabandhu Road had hailed an Ola cab to drop her friend at some point and was returning home in the same cab around 11.30 pm. It was then that her neighbours – whom she later identified as Nilanjan Das, Kutty Das and Sibu Das stopped the car and abused the woman. They then began assaulting her. The driver tried to intervene but he too was beaten up and the glass of his car completely damaged.
While a case was regisrtered on the complaint of Das, the driver too later lodged another separate case of damage to his car. Both cases are being investigated, said joint CP (crime and STF) Vishal Garg stating a case under IPC sections 323 and 341 (wrongful restraint and hurt) has been lodged in this regard.
The cops said a preliminary enquiry has revelaed that one of the accused – a local political leader – had borrowed money from the mother of the complainant but had been unable to return the money. Das had allegedly being rude to him on this issue lately and the accused wanted to extract his revenge. “All accused will be nabbed soon,” assured Garg.
