Mumbai: Whatsapp comes up with its much awaited and promising free voice calling feature to few users in India. As of now it appears to be on an invitation basis. The opportunity will be given only to users who have the latest version of the app installed.
Pradnesh Patil, a Whatsapp user with user name ‘Pradnesh07’ posted a video and screenshots on new interface that features voice calling in the latest WhatsApp application (v2.11.508). Patil, who was able to get the feature activated in his Nexus 5 which runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop.
The Reddit user (Whatsapp user) confirmed that the device should have a combination of the latest version of the WhatsApp app and Android OS. This is not the end. The device wouldn’t be able to activate the voice-calling feature until the users receive a call from someone else, who already have the feature activated.
The user notes a demerit that those who activate the Whatsapp voice calling feature only for the purpose of receiving calls will be barred from using the feature in future.
As per Patil, the user need to download the .apk file and the load file as they have not yet arrived on Play store. In addition he said, the person who has sent him the invite has confirmed that the feature works not only on Android 5.0 phones but on any other Android version, not only in India, but also in other countries.
The rollout feature is yet to be released. Meanwhile the feature has been quite promising for Q1 2015. There are possibilities that the feature will roll out soon globally but with slight difference in form and measure.
