Kolkata: The geologists have already predicted that the entire city of Kolkata will
collapse in an earthquake. West Bengal felt strong tremors on Wednesday due to a
5.5 magnitude earthquake with epicentre at Assam’s Kakrajhar. The inevitable
question arises that what will happen next.
Geologist Sujib Kar discussed the reasons for frequent earthquake tremors felt in
Kolkata and its remedies.
Innumerable high-rises and metro rails are responsible for frequent earthquakes in
Kolkata. Apart from that, the balance of the city’s surface is completely damaged
due to the metro tunnel set up below the Ganga river. The important fault line
which is running under the river Ganga was normal in the river’s silt. The surface
is now open as the metro’s line is going through it.
As a result of this, Kolkata has speedfastly moved from zone 2 to zone 4 earthquake
belt. This could lead to major earthquakes in the city in future.
The areas which will be the most affected if a major earthquake strikes are – Salt
Lake, Rajarhat, New Town, Dum Dum, Sinthi, Paikpara, Shyambazar, beleghata,
Belgharia, Sodepur and behala, Taratala, Metiabruz, Alipore in south Kolkata. A
major part of the city will collapse if a major earthquake strikes.
If the fault zone from below the mud is managed properly, then houses and buildings
will not collapse and there will be no casualties.
