Basirhat: Home Minister Rajnath Singh, on Thursday, chaired a meeting on internal security, the latest developments in the Valley and along the LoC. Sources say the issue of Baduria violence also figured in the meet.  Senior MHA officials, including MoS Home Hansraj Ahir, attended the meet.

On Wednesday, the Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi to take stock of the situation over basirhat violence.

Violence erupted in Basirhat in North 24 Paragnas district as a result of a Facebook post. The Home Ministry has dispatched 300-400 CRPF personnel to defuse the situation. The unrest gave way to a political slugfest between the BJP and the TMC.

West Bengal Governor Tripathi had summoned Ms. Banerjee to Raj Bhawan  which she took major exception to. The CM then addressed a news conference, where she accused the Governor of threatening her.

Slamming the Governor for speaking “like a block president of the BJP”, Ms. Banerjee reminded him that while he had been nominated to his office, she had been elected directly by the people. She also had stern words for those involved in the communal clashes, warning them to ‘not test her patience.’

The Trinamool Congress has launched a fresh attack on the Governor, accusing him of “crossing” all constitutional limits and reminding him that the Raj Bhavan “could not be the party office of the BJP”.

Speaking to reporters, TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee charged, “The Governor has crossed the constitutional line. The way he spoke to the Chief Minister yesterday, he has forgotten that it is not Uttar Pradesh.”
