Kolkata: Amidst the Maggi row that has taken the country by storm, West Bengal government has sent samples of Maggi noodles for laboratory testing. The action was confirmed by the State’s Consumer Affairs Minister Sadhan Pandey on Wednesday.”Consumer Affairs Department has sent samples of Maggi noodles and one or two other products for testing,” Pandey told the reporters.The minister said the samples have been sent to industrial testing laboratory National Test House and if necessary, they could be sent to other laboratories as well.”The reports are expected within a few days. We will show the reports to the chief minister and then initiate action. We want to give a fair deal so that business is not hampered and people’s health is also protected,” he said.
Nestle’s Maggi noodle has been at the centre of a raging storm after Uttar Pradesh FDA tests found higher than stipulated levels of lead and MSG in it. Several state governments have ordered similar tests. However, Nestle IndiaBSE -9.05 % has claimed that it has got samples tested in an external laboratory as well as its in-house one, and the product is found “safe to eat”.
