Kolkata: Around 12,000 yellow cabs, 6,500 private buses and 400 minibuses will be off the roads over the next few days because of the panchayat elections. Close to 8,000 buses ply across the city daily.
The vehicles will be used to transport polling personnel to rural pockets of Howrah and South and North 24-Parganas. Police started requisitioning taxis, buses and minibuses early on Friday.
The panchayat elections will be held on Monday. App-cab operators Ola and Uber said there would be adequate number of vehicles on their platforms.
