South 24 Pargana: In a shocking incident, TMC supporters allegedly set the house of a CPM worker on fire, killing him and his wife.
Debhudab, a CPM candidate and his wife were set ablaze while they were asleep in their house in Kakdweep area last night. Their charred bodies were recovered this morning, ahead of the polling for the panchayat elections, reports said.
Central forces have not been deployed in the state for the elections despite incidents of violence reported in the run-up to the polls.
As the West Bengal panchayat election begins today, around 46,000 personnel of West Bengal Police have been deployed, besides a total of 12,000 Kolkata police, around 1500 security personnel from the state.
The rural polls began at 7 am today and will continue till 5 pm. 621 zilla parishads, 6157 panchayat samitis and 1,827 gram panchayats will go to polls. The counting of votes will be held on May 17.
