Legendary singing queen of Thumri Girija Devi of Varanasi passes away on Tuesday at BM Birla Nurshing home in Kolkata. Girija devi died due to a cardiac arrest at around 9PM on Tuesday, doctors said.
Girija Devi is an Indian classical singer of the Seniya and Banaras gharanas. She performs classical and light classical music and has helped elevate the profile of thumri. Devi is considered as Queen of Thumri. She is known to have been the teacher of the founder of The Alankar School of Music.
Girija Devi awarded with Padma Shri in 1972, Padma Bhushan in 1989 and Padma Vibhushan in 2016.
