Wagah border drill should be stopped: Yashwant Sinha

New Delhi: BJP leader and Former External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha on Monday raised questions over the continuance of the ‘ugly’ beating retreat ceremony at Wagah border which is being followed since 1959.

Sinha, who held the portfolios of External Affairs and Finance in the Atal Behari Vajpayee Government on Monday, at a business event said, “We have that ugly ceremony at Wagah, almost vulgar, I don’t know why we are continuing it but we are.”

The beating retreat ceremony is jointly followed by the Pakistani Rangers and the Border Security Force every evening, to mark the closing of the Wagah border.

During this ceremony the flags of both the countries are lowered by the security personnel and aggressive drill is also performed.
