Kolkata: Banasree Sengupta, one of the finest music legends of Bengal died on Sunday morning. From last few months she was suffering from breathing problem.
Sengupta (71) was undergoing treatment at the state-run SSKM Hospital and died there at 11.30 AM on Sunday, her brother Surya Sengupta said. “She was admitted at the hospital around 10 days ago with lung related problem,” he said.
West Bengal Chief Minister expressed grief over the singer’s death. She tweeted the following: Deeply saddened at the passing of legendary singer Banashree Sengupta. My condolences to her family and fans.
Reacting to the news of Sengupta’s death, singer Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta termed it a personal loss. The singer was very close to her husband ‘Shantida’ who died sometime ago and she was in depression since then, said Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta.
Singer Srikanto Acharya said, she was a very simple person. Singer Indranil Sen visited the hospital after receiving the news of the legend’s death.
According to government sources, Sengupta’s body was kept at the Rabindra Sadan for her fans to pay their last homage.
The Chief Minister is likely to visit the Rabindra Sadan, according to the sources.
Sengupta’s body will then be taken to her residence in south Kolkata and the last rites will be performed at Keoratala crematorium.
