Kolkata: Maestro literary person Ramapada Chowdhury passed away on Sunday evening at Belle View nursing home. He was 96 years old. He was admitted to hospital on Friday. He was suffering from physical inability due to his age.
People are mourning the demise of the erudite literary person. It is an end of an era. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has condoled the death of the maestro.
Ramapada Chowdhury started writting during second world war. Many of his writting adapted for film. Banpalashir Padabali, Ekhoni, Kharij, Akdin Achanak, Sundari are among his literary works. He has been felicitated with Sahitya Academy Award in 1988 for his literary creation ‘Bari Bodle Jai’.
Apart from this he received Ananda Award & Rabindra Award. University of Calcutta has awarded him with Sarat Chandra Chatterjee award and medal. Chowdhury’s first story ‘Udayasto’ has been first published in Jugantar and ‘Baro Ghorar astabol’ in Anandabazar Patrika.
Ramapada Chowdhury was born on 28 December 1922 in Kharagpur, West Bengal, British India. He completed his schooling from Kharagpur. Subsequently, he studied at Presidency College, Calcutta, and obtained his master’s degree in English Literature from the University of Calcutta.
After completing his Master’s, he got a job with Anandabazar Patrika. Later he became Associate Editor of the newspaper, and edited its Sunday supplement Rabibasariya for many years.
