Kolkata: One of the most famous footballers of the 60s-70s, Sukalyan Ghosh Dastidar passes away on Monday at private hospital near EM Bypass. He was 71 years old.
This former footballer representing Mohun Bangan, East Bengal and also represented the Indian team. In 1968, playing in Rajasthan, the striker scored 10 goals. The next year he joined Mohun Bagan. In 1973, he was elected as the captain of the Mohun Bagan team. From 1969 to 1974 he played in Mohun Bagan. In 1975 he moved to East-Bengal and played three years.
The striker scored 72 goals in Mohun Bagan. He plays against Myanmar in Pre-Olympics, led by Habib in 1972. He had 2 goals in 3 matches.
However, in 1973, a controversy was raised against him . Shankar Bandyopadhyay of Mohun Bagan left the field in the clash with East Bengal’s Subhash Bhowmik in the two major matches that year. Sukalyan Ghosh Dastidar lost his temper due to this incident. In the derby match, he punched the referee Bishnath Dutt.
Shyam Thapa, playing with him, said, ‘Sukalyan was a great man. He was a great shooter. I am very shocked by his death news.’
