Melbourne: Venus Williams advanced to her first Australian Open quarter-final in six years after upstaging sixth seed Agnieszka Radwanska.
At 34, Williams earned the right to contest her first grand slam quarter-final since Wimbledon in 2010 with a plucky 6-3 2-6 6-1 triumph. In deep trouble mid-match, Williams willed herself to victory.
“The third set, I went into a trance,” she said. “I just wanted to win.The first set wasn’t easy, it was almost an hour long. The second set, she played even better — which you have to expect from some body of her level.I just had to find a way to get through.” Said Williams after the match.
Williams will next play 19-year-old fellow American Madison Keys, who downed another compatriot Madison Brengle 6-2 6-4, for a place in the semi-finals.
