Kolkata:Jyotiprakash Basu, the Vice Chancellor of West Bengal State University has been asked to step down by the State Government. The message was conveyed to Basu by the Chief Secretary of the Education Department of the State. However, he did not make any comment on the decision.
After Kousik Gupta had stepped down as the VC of the University, Jyotiprakash Basu had taken his place. He was a professor of the Physics department of the University. But according to the norms, he did not qualify to be the VC of the University. Hence, he was removed from the post by the State Government, added the sources. It is also heard that the Court had sent a notice to the Governor in connection to the appointment of Basu who did not qualify to be the VC of the University. Acting in line with the notice, the Guv himself had asked the Higher Education Ministry to remove Basu as the VC of the West Bengal State University.
