Unusual Fee-Hike In VB Follows Protest, Situation Turns Topsy-Turvy


Santiniketan: With the no-response state to students demand on fee-hike, huge number of students gheraoed Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati Bidyut Chakraborty and some teachers and officials following a meeting on Tuesday evening.

Most of the students present in the protest were from undergraduate and postgraduate section of the varsity. The protest started at the Central Library area in the afternoon which continued till night.

Visva-Bharati University students protesting against 20% fee hike allegedly locked the gate of the university yesterday, 200 teachers & staff are still inside university premises.

The student were protesting for last ten days where no reply came after a course of discussion.

Following the escalating tension, V-C Bidyut Chakraborty called a meeting with the officials and the students representatives at Lipika Auditorium. Lack of a satisfying solution to the situation, the situation turned agitated after the meeting.

The V-C said after the meeting, “Saddened by students’ behavior. Yesterday, we had 5-hour discussion with them.”

Talking on the admission cost issue, the university officials said that the cost of admission form hiked two times for various courses and there was ten times hike in few cases.

Reportedly, the fees revised after a strech of eight years. The university authority said that, ministry of Human Resource Development asked to turn self-dependent. the fee-hike is a part of that.

The agitated student claimed that the students who were present there, heckled and by some people of university during their protest in the Central Library area on Tuesday.
