Unnao Rape: CBI Takes Over Case After Modi’s Intervention

New Delhi: Centre approves CBI probe into Unnao rape case. CBI took over case after PMO’s intervention.

Earlier, Uttar Pradesh police today said that the Unnao rape case will now be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and only the top investigating body will decide whether accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA will be arrested or not.

“BJP MLA (Kuldeep Sengar) stands as an accused. A case has been registered against him on basis of allegations. The matter is now handed over to the CBI. The CBI will now decide whether the MLA will be arrested or not,” OP Singh, UP Director General of Police, said.

In a press conference held today in Lucknow, Principal Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar said that the UP police will continue the probe till the CBI takes over the case.Kumar added that action has been taken against four doctors for negligence in treating Pappu Singh, the father of the rape victim, who died in custody.

The UP police officers told the media that the victim had first made a statement alleging rape to a court but did not name the accused Kuldeep Sengar. It was only later that the victim named the BJP MLA as one of the rape accused.

Since her first statement did not carry the name of Kuldeep Sengar, the police did not take action against the BJP MLA. Arvind Kumar added that the kin of the Unnao rape victim will be provided security.

The Unnao rape victim’s uncle will now withdraw his complaint from the sessions court in Unnao against BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar and his aides as an FIR has been filed against the ruling party’s accused lawmaker after an SIT report.
