UNESCO Visit Gives Hope To DHR

Siliguri: A UNESCO team came to a visit to the hills for an annual review of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR).

They held a meeting with DHR officials at Elysia Building, the headquarters of DHR in Kurseong, 50km from Siliguri, on Wednesday.

“Representatives of UNESCO visit Darjeeling at least twice a year. But this time, they came almost after a year because of the unrest in the hills last year. They had a meeting with us and on Thursday, they will visit Darjeeling. They will check the tracks and the station buildings damaged during the unrest,” said N.K. Narzary, the director of DHR.

After the 105-day shutdown in the hills last year during which toy train services were disrupted and heritage structures like the Sonada and Gayabari stations were torched – the Elysia Building was ransacked too – this is the first visit by a Unesco team.
