New Delhi: Millions of mobile phone users found an invalid Unique Identification
Authority of India (UIDAI) toll-free number in their contact list on Friday.
After it created a furore, Google issued a statement telling that the number
18003001947 and helpline number 112 were “inadvertently coded into the SetUp wizard
of the Android release given to OEMs for use in India and remained there since.”
The controversy remains over how a number could enter the phone book of millions of
Android users without their consent.
However, UIDAI and telecom operators have denied any role in the matter.
