Srinagar: In midnight encounter, two militants were killed in Pulwama district of south Kashmir on Thursday. Both of them are believed to be close aides of Hizbul Mujahideen chief Riyaz Naikoo, police said.
This comes a day after Lashkare-Taiba’s top commander Naveed Jatt and another terrorist were gunned down by security forces during an encounter in Budgam.
Jatt was wanted for the murder of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari. The gunfight broke out late Wednesday between troops of 50 RR (Rashtriya Rifles) and terrorists in the Khrew area of Awantipora in Pulwama. There was specific information on their presence in the area. That is when a joint party was sent out to launch a cordon and search operation.
Security forces were fired upon by militants which triggered the encounter, said a police official. Arms and ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter, including 02 AK-series weapons.
The militants have been identified as Adnan Ahmad Lone alias Uqaab of Braw Bandina in Awantipora, and Adil Bilal Bhat alias Umair Al Hizbi of Malangpora in Pulwama.
According to the police, Bhat was also behind the killing of head constable Ashiq Hussain in Awantipora in October 2017. Speaking to India Today TV, Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbagh Singh said, The operation was a crucial one and extremely well-coordinated.
No collateral damage occurred in the operation. According to sources, the Army has eliminated nine of the top 12 terrorists in the last one year. A total of 234 terrorists have been killed in 10 months.
