Hyderabad: Twenty-two people, including nine women, seven children and six men, were killed when the van in which they were travelling fell into the Godavari River after hitting the railings of Dowleswaram Cotton Barrage near Rajahmundry at around 2 a.m.
The deaceased passengers belonged to Ramaiahpeta of Atchyutapuram mandal in Visakhapatnam district. The passengers were returning from Tirupati via Vijayawada.
Andhra Pradesh Deputy CM N Chinna Rajappa reached the spot and interacted with the lone survivor. The deceased are identified as Eegala Ramana, Venkat, Raju, Seenamma, Rambabu, Kondatalli, Prasad, Kanaka, Kosamma, Apparao (driver of the van), Gopi, Sai, Poorna, Namit, Karthik, Navya, Sandhya and Pavan.
According to Police, they were informed about the incident at around 5:45 am by one of the morning walkers. All the bodies were shifted to government hospital, Rajahmundry for post-mortem.
