Durgapur: An officer-in-charge (OC) traffic of Asansol South police station, riding pillion behind his son on their family two-wheeler, died after a truck knocked him off the bike and ran over his head at a crossing on Durgapur Expressway on Monday morning.
His helmet came off as the motorcycle was hit by the truck. The heavy vehicle’s wheels then ran over the OC’s head, smashing it beyond recognition.The killer truck driver drove off. Police have launched raids to nab him.
Around 7.45am on Monday , Sasibhusan Tewari (48) and his son Abhinash were headed for Asansol from their Durgapur home when a truck suddenly hit their bike. Abhinash, who was riding the bike with his father, lost balance and the two-wheeler fell on the Durgapur Expressway, throwing Sasibhusan on the highway.
With his helmet on the road, the truck’s wheels ran over his head, killing him on the spot. Abhinash, who had come home on leave from his posting with Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), escaped with minor bruises. The cops were alerted and Sasibhusan was rushed to Durgapur subdivisional hospital, where doctors declared him “dead on arrival”. An investigation has started.
Asansol Durgapur police commissioner L N Meena said: “The OC traffic was wearing a helmet, which got dislodged off his head an fell on the highway after the truck hit the two-wheeler.He sustained severe head injury after the truck’s wheels ran over his head, and succumbed on the spot. We are trying to nab the killer driver.”
