Tributes Paid To Soldier Martyred In Zakura Terror Attack

Srinagar: Jawan Ghanshyam, a soldier of paramilitary force SSB who lost his life in a terror attack at Zakura in Jammu and Kashmir Friday, was paid tributes by the army on Saturday in Srinagar. After the wreath-laying ceremony, DG SSB Archana Ramasundaram paid her respects to the soldier.

Militants had attacked a security convoy in Zakura area on the outskirts of Srinagar leading to the death of Jawan Ghanshyam and injuring 8 other soldiers. The jawans retaliated and the firing lasted 15 minutes. “The condition of four jawans is critical,” a senior official said.

According to IG SSB Deepak Kumar, three companies of SSB patrol party were returning to camp from duty when at around 7:30 pm terrorists opened fire on one of the vehicle. “Four SSB jawans have been injured in the attack, while they were returning from duty.”

Banned Al-Umar Mujahideen terrorist organisation claimed the responsibility for carrying out the attack and also warned of similar actions in near future. This outfit had become dormant in the early part of 1990s and ceased to exist after its chief, Mushtaq Ahmed Zargar alias ‘Mushtaq Latram’, was arrested in 1992.

The attack in Zakura came after a series of attacks in recent times at Indian army camps. On September 18, terrorists belonging to Pakistan’s militant outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad had attacked an army camp at Uri, killing 19 soldiers. The attack led India to launch ‘surgical strikes’ on terrorist launch pads across LoC. Similar terrorist attacks were carried out at army camps in Baramullah and Langate. On October 4, suspected terrorists also attacked a police station at Kulgam in the state.
