Kolkata: The BJP on Wednesday alleged that Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress is indulging in revenge politics in Bengal. The BJP’s reaction came after reports that the tribal couple, who had hosted BJP chief Amit Shah for lunch recently, had joined the Trinamool Congress.
According to reports, the Mahali family of Naxalbari had gone missing on Tuesday night and resurfaced on Wednesday morning, along with Trinamool Congress leader Gautam Deb.
While addressing a news conference, Union minister Ravishankar Prasad hit out at the West Bengal government and alleged that the couple was kidnapped by the TMC.
“This is textbook case of revenge politics. We condemn it outright, this will not stop BJP’s expansion in Bengal,” Prasad said.
He said the Trinammol congress is nervous after the success of Amit Shah’s programme in Bengal. Rahul Sinha from the West Bengal unit of BJP also alleged that the family was pressured to join TMC. The local BJP leaders added that despite repeated requests, the Naxalbari police did not register a formal complaint into the incident. The TMC dismissed BJP’s claim and said there was no pressure on the family and that it joined the party willingly.
“Politics is never forceful. Our chief minister has created an Adivasi development department for the marginalised section of society. The Mahalis have willingly joined TMC today. There was no pressure on them,” said TMC’s Darjeeling Zilla president Gautam Deb.
