New Delhi: Mild tremors were felt in parts of New Delhi after an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale struck Tajikistan in central Asia on Monday.
Locals said tremors were felt in Delhi, suburban Ghaziabad and Noida. No major damage of life or property has been reported yet.
The epicentre of the quake was 111 kilometres (65 miles) southwest of Karakul and at a depth of 28.7 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said. According to the National Seismological Division of the Ministry of Earth Science, the earthquake hit Tajikistan at 1.20 PM (IST).
Tremors were felt in the National Capital Region (NCR) and also in parts of Kashmir. Parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh were also jolted by the moderate quake.
The earthquake shook north India with tremors that lasted almost a minute. Hundreds rushed out of shaking buildings and remained on the streets for some time, fearing aftershocks.
