New Delhi: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Arjun Singh is expected to join the Bharatiya Janata Party today, a move which will prove to be a major organisational setback for the TMC in West Bengal.
Arjun Singh, who is an MLA from Bhatpara, has been an asset for TMC, holding the fort for two decades. This switch has exposed the rift present in the TMC.
Arjun Singh, who is known to have influence in the area spreading from North Kolkata to Nadia, has been the game changer for TMC in several elections due to his local connections.
Singh has even done booth management for the TMC on the ground level from panchayat polls to Parliamentary elections.
What makes his an important asset to the TMC is his credible presence in the Hindi speaking people of the area which are more that 60 per cent in number despite being a border district that shares International Border with Bangladesh.
He also did the ground work for TMC MP Dinesh Trivedi who won from Barrackpore Parliamentary Constituency.
In 2014 elections, a majority of Hindi speaking voters were brought under one roof which resulted in the TMC emerging victorious.
Sources claim that it was the depleting ground support due to minority appeasement policies and differences that led to him parting ways from the party.
