TMC Clash Killed Woman In Jaynagar

Diamond Harbour: A homemaker died after taking a bullet fired during a clash between two Trinamool factions over panchayat poll nominations at Jaynagar in South 24-Parganas on Friday.

Selima Ghazi, 40, slumped after being hit in the abdomen and lay there for over two hours as a police team that initially went to the spot was resisted and outnumbered and had to wait for reinforcements.

Supporters of Jaynagar Trinamool president Gour Sarkar and local MLA Biswanath Das have filed nominations for a gram panchayat seat. Both factions have been threatening each other to withdraw their candidatures.

Soon, more men trooped in, hurling bombs and opening fire. “Selima was caught in the crossfire. She slumped on the road but there was no one to come to her rescue. We tried to enter the area but had to wait for reinforcements. We were outnumbered against the miscreants with bombs and guns. It was around 4pm when we entered the area and dispersed the groups,” said the officer, adding two persons had been arrested.

Asked about the incident, a South 24-Parganas Trinamool leader said: “We are gathering information. A comment at this stage would be premature.”
