Summer is here and every passing day feels hotter and increasingly uncomfortable. While we try our best to battle the heat and keep ourselves cool, our skin also needs equal care in this season. This is because the sun’s harsh rays take a toll on the exposed areas of our skin like face, hands, feet and neck; leading to tanning, blemishes and other skin problems.
Keep yourself hydrated
It’s important to drink a lot of water in summers not only for your body but also for your skin. This is because, with increasing heat, our skin starts losing its moisture and becomes dry. But as the saying goes, prevention is better than cure, so before emptying bottles of moisturizers on your skin, make sure you are drinking adequate amount of water throughout the day. Avoid consuming aerated drinks and indulge in fresh fruit juice, fresh lime water, coconut water or ‘chhas’ instead.
Sleep well, at least 7-8 hours a day
A good night’s sleep is extremely essential for a healthy, smiling skin. If you are sleep-deprived, your body produces a greater amount of the stress hormone called cortisol. Increased levels of this hormone can lead to a greater amount of stress and inflammation in the body, which in turn affects your skin’s quality. Also, while you’re sleeping, the body’s hydration rebalances. In this way, our skin is able to recover moisture. At least 7-8 hours of daily sleep is recommended not just for your skin, but also for your overall health.
Keep your face clean, moisturised
It’s very important to keep your face clean in summers. Washing your face with a face wash at least twice daily (morning and evening) can be really helpful. Choose the face wash or cleanser that suits your skin type (dry, oily or combination skin). If you have dry skin, don’t forget to apply moisturiser before going to bed. The same applies for lips as well. Apply a lip balm or cream at night as extreme heat leaves the lips dry and chapped.
Never step out without applying sunscreen
Do not ever step out without applying sunscreens in summer. Yes, these are a must! Make sure you choose the perfect sunscreen, depending on your skin type. In summers, sunscreen lotions having a combination of both sunscreen and moisturiser can be beneficial. It is advisable to apply sunscreen at least 15-20 minutes before stepping out.
Cover yourself properly before stepping out
Is your skin very prone to tan? Even though sunscreen does most of the job, using a scarf to cover your face or an umbrella can really protect your skin from harsh sunrays and prevent tanning. Wearing shades is advisable as these not only protect the eyes from harmful ultraviolet rays but also take care of the area under your eyes.
Loud makeup is a big ‘No No’
Loud makeup is not a comfortable option in summer as it does not let your skin breathe and also tends to melt, making your face appear messy. Say ‘yes’ to waterproof makeup in summer to prevent melting. Also, try avoiding heavy base makeup for your skin and stick to light essential make up like kaajal and coloured lip gloss before stepping out during the day time. Herbal lip gloss is a smarter choice any day.
Apart from the above, a balanced diet and daily workout is necessary for a healthy body and smiling skin. If you are not a great fan of gyms, sweat it out by walking or running daily. Sweating strengthens our immune system and gives us healthy-looking skin!
