Three smugglers arrested with Gecko

Jalpaiguri: Three smugglers were arrested along with a Gecko worth Rs 15 lakh by the forest department. The officials of SSB and Dhupguri Moraghat range’s forest officials conducted a joint operation and recovered the Gecko from Falokata’s deomali area. The arrests are Ajiur Haq, Mithu Ali and Tahajul Haq. All of them are the residents of Deomali area.

According to Forest department and SSB sources, the lizards are caught from the forests of Assam, Bhutan and North Bengal with the help of local link men and are smuggled. The Gecko’s skin, fat, nails and body’s oil are sold in the foreign market in lakhs of rupees.

The reptiles are being smuggled from Dooars, Siliguri to Nepal, Hong Kong, Bangkok and China. Additional forest ranger Amrita Dutta was at the head of the operation.

Among the arrested youths, two are students of class 12 and were about to sell the Gecko at a price of 10,000 rupees.
