Wellinghton:A former Wellington teacher who had an ongoing sexual relationship with a teenage female student from another school has been jailed for two years and four months. The 30-year-old had been on a school trip with the victim and other students last year. He began spending time with her, friended her on Facebook and exchanged messages via social media and texts.
Another teacher on the trip became concerned about the nature of their relationship and confronted the man over the Facebook messages but the man said it was not against school policy to friend a student from another school. After the trip the two continued to meet. He arranged to meet her at a Wellington hotel where they had sex. Despite being spoken to by the principal of his school and his family and the victim’s family who were concerned, the relationship continued.
He had pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual connection with a young person in October last year and February this year. A third charge of grooming the girl was withdrawn.Wellington District Court judge Barbara Morris on Friday suppressed his name, the name of the schools involved, and details of the the school trip.
She said he had been in a position of trust during the trip, with the parents expecting their children to be protected. The victim was too young to make mature decisions about sex.
