Cooch Behar: A primary school-teacher arrested from Dinhata on Monday night was found dead in the police lock-up on Tuesday morning.
According to sources, Soumyadwip Chakraborty, 28, a teacher at Tiadaha Gorkhapara Fifth Plan Primary School, had been arrested for allegedly being involved in a spat in an inebriated state. “A police patrolling van moving through the locality intercepted him and took him to Dinhata police station,” said a source.
On Tuesday morning, some policemen found Chakraborty lying still inside the lock-up and took him to a hospital where doctors pronounced him brought dead.
Representatives of Trinamul-backed primary teachers’ association demanded a complete probe to ascertain the cause of Chakraborty’s death.
“We want complete investigation of the case. Whoever found responsible for his death should be punished,” said Dharmendra Singha, president of Paschimbanga Trinamul Prathamik Siksha Samiti of Dinhata zone.
Police officers, however, remained tight-lipped over the case. “We are waiting for post-mortem reports,” said a police officer.
