Tirunelveli: Police on Wednesday arrested eight teachers who were accused of forcing Dalit students to clean toilets in a government aided high school at a village in the district.
Local Dalits, with the support of some political outfits have been staging a series of agitations in the past weeks demanding action against the teachers who forced the students of a scholl in Keelapathai Pandithankurichi near Kalakkad.
They charged that the students had been cleaning the toilets for the past eight months. The complaints given under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act turned out to be futile since the Police had taken no action.
The issue was brought to light 20 days ago. The police refused to reveal the identity of the teachers besides the sections under which the case had been registered.
The Left parties, All India Youth Federation and some Dalit welfare organizations also joined the protest by the village residents. Assurance to take necessary action against those found guilty was given by M Karunakaran, District Collector.
