Kabul: Taliban fighters ambushed Afghan vice-president and former warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum’s vehicle on Friday, but the war-hardened leader’s men fought back. It is understood the vice-president’s vehicle was on a remote highway in the country when the fighters struck.
His spokesman said Mr Dostum’s men retaliated, killing eight militants and capturing a dozen more. In March, Afghanistan’s intelligence agency said it had foiled a previous attempt to assassinate Mr Dostum in the northerly Jawzjan province.
The assassination was to have been carried out by a suicide bomber who had hidden a bomb on the back of his horse as he attended a game of buzkashi, a national sport.
