Kolkata: Swami Smaranananda, has been elected the 16th President of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission. An immediate past vice-president, Swami Smarananda, was elected to the top most post of the Ram Krishna Order during a meeting of the board of trustees of the Math and the governing body of the Mission at Belur Math on Monday
Eighty-eight year old Swami Smarananda succeeds Swami Atmasthananda, who passed away on 18 June. He would formally takeover as the President Maharaj on 21 July.
Swami Smarananandaji was born at Tanjavur in Tamil Nadu in 1929. Inspired by the ideals of Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda he joined the Mumbai RK Ashrama in 1952 at the age of 22 and embraced the monastic life.
From Mumbai centre, he was transferred to Advaita Ashrama in Kolkata in 1958. He served at both Mayavati and Kolkata centres of the Ashrama for 18 years. He was assistant editor of Prabuddha Bharata, the English journal of Ramakrishna Math and Mission started by Swami Vivekananda.
