Beirut: At least 41 people were killed and 40 wounded in two suicide explosions in a busy area in Beirut’s southern suburb, a stronghold of Lebanese Hezbollah, on Thursday, a medical official said.

“A suicide bomber blew himself up near a small snack bar on the main street of Burj el-Barajneh and after seven minutes, another bomber blew himself up near the main mosque of the region,” a security source told.

The security forces have reached the areas and the civil defence teams are evacuating the injured to nearby hospitals, the source added.

The southern suburbs of Beirut are considered the stronghold of Hezbollah, which is fighting in Syria alongside the forces of President Bashar al-Assad against Islamic fundamentalists.
