Street Children Participates In Bhai Phonta

Kolkata: In an excellent initiative by the Medical Bank, the street children first gave ‘bhai phota’ to the wise men and then the sisters gave the ‘photas’ to the brothers. According to rituals, plates full of sweets were given to the street children.

This programme was organised on Friday morning in front of the Sova Bazar metro station which saw the participation of 200 street children. These street children gave ‘phonta’ to the pictures of Rabindranath Tagore, Khudiram, Bose, Deshbandhu Das, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and many others. One of the organising members, D Ashish said, “Many of the new generation are not well acquainted with the wise men. Hence, apart from their same old way of education, they must be given knowledge about all these. Hence, we took the initiative to explain to them the contribution of such big men.”

According to the street children, one of them said that till this date they saw bhai phonta but never got the opportunity to give phonta. Through this programme, their dreams were fulfilled. They also said that though they heard names of Rabindranath Tagore or Netaji, but this is the first time they came to know about them.
