Kolkata: The state CID has issued a summons to the expelled CPM MP Ritabrata Banerjee and Delhi Police has indicated they, too, may follow suit. This follows an FIR against him by Namrata Datta, a Bengaluru-based techie from Balurghat, who accused him of “having sex with her by giving a false impression that the separation suit with his wife was under way”.
Banerjee has denied the charges and lodged a counter complaint claiming the woman was threatening and blackmailing him. He also sniffs at a political ploy behind the FIR.
The CID has directed Banerjee to be present at Bhawani Bhawan on Friday. Rajesh Kumar, ADG (CID) reportedly said that they have served the notice at his Garfa residence asking him to be present for recording his statement on October 13.
Where the DCP (New Delhi) B K Singh confirmed that an FIR under Section 376 IPC (rape) has been registered against the MP , based on an FIR they had received from the Garfa police station in Kolkata. Police sources say a notice will be sent to Banerjee for joining the investigations. Datta, too, will be called to record her statement under Section 164 CrPC. On Wednesday, Namrata was also sent for a medical test at the Balurghat district hospital.
Banerjee’s complaint, lodged at Garfa police station, rubbishes Datta’s charges. He has stated that she had approached him for an Rs 2.5 lakh loan on July 20. On October 15, she demanded Rs 50 lakh, threatening legal action. Banerjee also alleges that Datta’s police complaint had been lodged under the direction of an influential state leader with the intent to damage his political career.
Datta alleged that Banerjee had sex with her several times, promising to marry her. She claimed she had also given him valuable gifts but was now denying the promises. After sending an email complaint to the chief minister, Datta lodged the complaint with Balurghat PS on Tuesday. She also sent a complaint to the Garfa PS, under whose jurisdiction Banerjee stays. The Balurghat complaint has been taken up by the CID and the Garfa complaint has been registered in Delhi for the “place of occurence” of the alleged crime mentioned in the FIR is Delhi.
