Kolkata: Mamata Banerjee announced the list of Trinamool Congress candidates on Tuesday. The BJP’s central party is taking some time to declare the candidate list of West Bengal. The state BJP sources said that they are going hold a meeting in a flat at south Kolkata on Thursday night.
Top BJP leaders will be present in this meeting. But the important thing is that at the meeting, a Trinamool Congress councilor from south Dumdum can join the BJP – this speculation has been created.
The BJP sources said that the councilor himself has expressed willingness to change the party. The BJP’s Kailash Vijayvargiya, BJP observer, used the flat at Elgine Road in Kolkata. On Thursday, BJP has been able to drag the Bhatpara MLA Arjun Singh to the saffron brigade. The other two grassroots leaders may also join.
The BJP leadership is going to sit in the flat at Elgin Road at the night. Presidents of the Morcha, all leaders including general secretaries will be in the meeting.
Arjun Singh is the third prominent Trinamool leader to join the BJP in the last few weeks, after Bishnupur lawmaker Soumitra Khan and Bolpur lawmaker Anupam Hazra, both of whom were simultaneously expelled.
Why is Arjun Singh important? He is a four-term lawmaker from Bhatpara, with a hold in several other Assembly segments in the Barrackpore parliamentary seat and influence in North 24 Parganas district. He is also chairman of the Bhatpara municipality with loyal Councillors.
His equation with Dinesh Trivedi has been rocky for sometime. In the 2014 Lok Sabha election, Mr Trivedi won Barrackpore but lost in the Bhatpara assembly segment. In 2016 Assembly elections, Arjun Singh romped home as legislator with a handsome margin.
