Varanasi Stampede: Death Toll Rises To 24


Update: News agency ANI reports that the death toll has risen to 24.

Varanasi:  More than 12 people are feared dead and many others injured in a stampede at a religious procession in Varanasi on Saturday. UP CM announces Rs 2 lakhs each for kin of those killed in the Varanasi stampede,also announces Rs 50,000 each for the critically injured. Death toll in stampede during Baba Jai Gurdev’s sabha in Varanasi rises to 19.

The stampede occurred in Ramnagar area of Varanasi during a demonstration by the followers of Baba Jai Guru Dev in favour of prohibition.

Initial reports said the accident occurred due to poor crowd managment on the Rajghat bridge across the River Ganga. The stampede was triggerred off when the followers surged to catch a glimpse of their religious leader.
