Barasat: Three smugglers have been arrested from Barasat in North 24-Parganas along with snake venom said to be worth about Rs 100-crore. Acting on a tip off, a joint team of state forest department and Sashastra Seema Bal personnel intercepted a car at Barasat on Wednesday afternoon when it was heading towards the Kolkata airport.

On search, they found three glass jars containing snake venom that was being smuggled by three men travelling in the car. Following the recovery, the trio was arrested and their car and venom were confiscated. The three have been identified as Debajit Bose, Nayan Deb, and Buddhadeb Khara.

Preliminary interrogation has revealed that they had smuggled in the venom from Bangladesh through Basirhat border and were supposed to handover to an accomplice at Kolkata airport. From there, the valuable venom was to be smuggled to China by flight.

Forest department sources said that snake venom is in great demand in China for the manufacture of costly drugs and intoxicants. Smugglers usually use the Hilli border in north Bengal to smuggle the item from Bangladesh and then ship the same to China via Siliguri-Nepal corridor. But several interceptions by forest officials in Siliguri-Jalpaiguri in the past one year have now compelled the smugglers to try the air route to China.
