New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday declared that Sri Lanka’s new President Maithripala Srisena will be visiting New Delhi later this month which is expected to be the Sri Lankan President’s maiden foreign visit.
Modi tweeted, “I look forward to welcoming President Sirisena later this month.” He wished a goodwill message to Sri Lanka as it celebrated Independence Day. Modi also added that the bonds of history, culture and shared values between the two countries are unbreakable.
Though no official confirmation was available, Srilankan sources said that the Sri Lankan President will be travelling to delhi on Feb 16 for a two day visit.
The ties between India and Lanka were often strained during the rule of Srisena’s predecessor Mahinda Rajapakshe for supporting China openly. Even former prime Minister Manmohan Singh had boycotted a 2013 commonwealth summit that was hosted by Rajapakse.
