Colombo: The Srilankan navy arrested 86 Indian fishermen from the eastern Srilankan coast of Mullaithivu on Thursday night for trespassing and illegal fishing. Spokesperson of the Lankan navy Indica Silva said that they apprehended the fisherman and seized 10 fishing boats as the former are trespassing in the Srilankan territory. Later the navy hand over the arrested fishermen to the Trincoomali police.
The Srilankan fishermen accused their Indian counterpart of encroaching and illegal fishing in the Lankan waters. The Srilankan Ministry of Fisheries on the other hand said that the March 5 bilateral meeting to discuss issues relating to the fisherman has been postponed.
