Kolkata: Sovan Chatterjee’s name hence got removed from Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet of ministers. On Tuesday, Sovan resigned from the portfolios of Housing and Fire and Services department. After this, the party supremo instructed him to resign from the position of Mayor too.

Post this, chaos had erupted at Dharmatala’s red house. It is a holiday on Wednesday. But the Chairperson’s and commissioner’s departments are open. Municipal commissioner Khalil Ahmed reached the corporation early in the morning. Chairperson Mala Roy also arrived. As per rules, Mayor Sovan Chatterjee is supposed to submit his resignation to chairperson.

The party has already announced that after Sovan leaves his post, his position will be looked after by municipal commissioner Khalil Ahmed. But a legal problem has cropped up as along with Mayor’s resignation, the Mayor Parishad will be disrupted too. No Mayor Parishad will be able to sign in any file. This problem will be there until and unless a new Mayor is elected. Discussions on this have already started at Nabanna and Municipal corporation.

But the problem is that no one can be a Mayor until and unless he is a councillor as per the law. According to sources, a bill will be submitted at the Vidhan Sabha on Thursday for amendment of the law. The mayor will be elected as a councilor within six months of sitting. TMC top officials will also meet on Thursday to decide who will be the next Mayor. The meeting will take place in the presence of Mamata Banerjee and all the councillors will be present.

Two names are being speculated to become the next Mayor. One is former mayor Subrata Mukherjee and the other is Kolkata Puranigam Mayor Parishad Debashis Kumar. According to TMC sources, Firhad Hakim could also be made the next Mayor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation. He has worked as a councillor for several days. However, it will be known after Thursday’s meeting.
