South Africa Mine Collapse: 100 ‘Unaccounted For’

Johannesburg: More than 100 people were “unaccounted for” after a gold mine in Mpumalanga province in eastern South Africa collapsed, a spokesman for the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) Manzini Zungu said on Friday.

“Approximately 115 of our members are trapped underground after the main offices at Makonjwaan Gold Mine in Barberton situated in Mpumalanga province, tragically caved in at 08.40 am this morning,” said Zungu in a statement.

“At this point it’s unclear what caused the disaster.”
