New Delhi: A video of a Somali man responding to PM Modi’s much criticised Kerala-Somalia comparison has gone viral on social-networking site Twitter.
“You don’t have degree. I am Somalian, I have degree. Somalia is not better than Kerala, Somalia is better than you,” he says in the video, a 20-second version of which is being shared widely on social media.
The man is referring to the recent debate on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s academic degrees, kick-started by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
PM Modi’s statement comparing Kerala with Somalia angered many politicians and social media users, triggering the viral trend #PoMoneModi (Po means go, Mone means son). Users used the hashtag to share memes, cartoons and jokes laced with ridicule on Modi. Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy also attacked the PM in a letter, saying his remarks were “baseless” and demanded an apology.
Somalia has one of the highest rates of child malnutrition and infant mortality in the world. Kerala, meanwhile, has the lowest infant mortality rate in India. PM Modi compared the two during an election rally in Kerala, a state set to hold elections on May 16. “Infant mortality rate among the scheduled tribe community in Kerala is worse than Somalia,” he said.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is vying for success in the southern Indian state, since it has traditionally been ruled by either the Congress or a coalition of left parties.
