New Delhi: A 33-year-old Lance Naik was found hanging in an under renovation toilet in Tihar’s Jail number 3 Wednesday morning. Vinod Kumar, the undertrial prisoner, had been arrested on charges of abutment of suicide and dowry harassment filed against him by his wife, who had committed suicide last month.
Kumar’s body was spotted by a staff member inside the toilet after he was found missing from his barrack in Jail number 3. He used a blanket to hang himself from a hook fixed in the ceiling, said a jail official.
Additional Inspector General (Tihar) Mukesh Prasad said, “Kumar was a resident of Rajori district in Jammu and Kashmir. The incident came to light when a search was launched after he was found missing from morning prayers. An inquiry has been ordered and local police informed.”
He added that Kumar’s fellow inmates said he was upset over his wife’s allegations against him and that he was innocent. But the inmates said he showed no inclination to commit suicide.
Sources said Kumar had been lodged in Tihar since February 18. He had married a woman against the wishes of his family nearly eight months ago. But his wife accused him of harassing her for dowry and committed suicide on February 16 this year. Sources said his wife had left a suicide note in which she had said Kumar “suspected her character”.
A case was registered against Kumar under 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the IPC at Delhi Cantonment police station. Police later added Section 306 (abetment of suicide) in the FIR.
Police said Kumar used to write in his journal. Sources said he had left a note in his diary saying “I am coming to you, we will meet soon”.
Police said his body has been sent for a postmortem examination and the incident is being investigated. Police are also checking CCTV footage of the jail to verify the sequence of events.
