Guwahati: A massive protest by thousands of BJP workers in Guwahati on Monday turned violent as police resorted to lathi-charge and fired tear gas shells.
The protest was trigged after Assam Congress leader Nilmoni Sen Deka commented that Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani is PM Modi’s second wife.
Protesters strongly condemned the defamatory comment and demanded Deka’s arrest. Protests were held at several other paces across Assam on Monday, sources said.
The Assam unit of BJP demanded the arrest of senior Congress leader and former minister Nilamoni Sen Deka for allegedly making the remark against Union minister Smriti Irani and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
