Howrah: The Howrah-bound Shatabdi Express from New Jalpaiguri was halted at Masagram station in East Burdwan district after smoke started emanating from one of the coaches.
The train was near Masagram around 1.30pm when some passengers in the third coach from the engine spotted the smoke. The coach was evacuated at Masagram around 1.40pm. “There were no casualties,” a railway official said.
Passengers said the smoke spread quickly and filled the entire coach in no time, leading to a rush among the passengers to step out. The coach was separated from the rest of the train and the passengers were accommodated in other coaches.
A fire engine arrived at the spot and controlled the smoke. The train left Masagram station around 3.30pm and reached Howrah around 5pm, nearly three hours behind schedule.
